Burundi MSD opposition 'joggers' get life sentences
BBC news reported that the government in Burundi has been trying to propose a tighter restriction on the senate overseeing the ethnic balance in the state but due to falling short of one vote, this proposal has not been passed. Also in Burundi, permission must be sought from the authorities to hold a political march or public gathering. Recently, the MSD (Movement for Solidarity and Democracy) said they were out jogging when a police crackdown broke out. On the other hand, government officials are saying that the session went against their amendments because they were supposed to have knowledge of any sporting activities and the 'joggers' never told them of any sporting event. The officials feel that they were using this as a front to organize a demonstration that was clearly illegal. The brutality that arose between the police officers and the joggers led to several people being inured and now the courts have sentenced 21 people to life in prison for participating in what they claim to be an illegal demonstration.
