Dozens killed in spate of Nigeria attack
This news story
on CNN is about Boko Haram, which is
an Islamist militant group whose ambitions range from the stricter enforcement
of Sharia law in Northern Nigeria, to the total destruction of the Nigerian
state and its government. Continual
incursions on the Nigerian people have occurred since 2009 (when Boko Haram
came to prominence) but the latest attacks in Borno, Nigeria have once again
rattled the citizens and the government is trying to control the
terrorist. On Friday night, four bombs
were dropped on the village of Daglun
by government aircrafts because the military mistook the village for a Boko
Haram camp that they were trying to bomb to prevent further attacks from the
terrorist; this left about twenty people dead and wounded about twenty-five. In Maduguri,
two bombs went off about two minutes apart landing in a crowd of people that
were watching soccer on television screens in the open leaving dozens killed
and injured. On Saturday attackers
raided the village of Mainok, coming
in on four wheelers and motorcycles, and opened fire with RPGs (rocket
propelled grenades) and AK-47 rifles; leaving thirty-nine people dead and
destroying the entire town. Although the
Nigerian military has claimed not to cause any of the casualties of the
Nigerian people on purpose, their lack of compassion seems to imply that they
themselves are attacking the Nigerian people and using Boko Haram as a cover-up
for rampant killing.
